The Family 4th at Lake Union, produced by One Reel

On Monday, July 4th, One Reel will produce a celebration and fireworks display over Lake Union, thanks to generous donations by over 100 local supporters.

Anyone in Seattle can watch the fireworks, which are set to light up the sky starting at 10p.  The fireworks will be launched from a barge in the lake near Gas Works park.  For boats on Lake Union, traffic lanes will close at 8:30p and reopen after the fireworks display ends, according to Seattle Harbor Patrol.

Please be respectful of neighbors to this event, and do not park yourself – or your vehicle – on private property, or block access during the display.  The Seattle Police Department will have many roads surrounding Gas Works Park closed, or open for limited access only, starting at Noon on Monday, July 4th.  Please plan your road travel to and from Fremont accordingly.

Many people will, of course, choose to celebrate the 4th in Gas Works Park, for good reason.  One Reel has organized a day of fun activities for all ages.  On the playfield, from Noon – 8pm, there will be stilt-walkers, Euro-Bungee, climbing walls, face painting, kite making, kickball and a Wacky World Inflatable Play Center.  On the Bartell Drugs stage, local band The Dusty 45s will perform – both before and after the fireworks display.  Free samples will be distributed by several vendors, including water from Talking Rain.  KUBE 93 FM, KISS 106.1 FM, KEXP 90.3 FM, Seattle Weekly and The Seattle Times will all be on-hand.  While visitors can bring their own food (no personal barbecues, however,) there will be food vendors in the park, as well as a beer garden, open from Noon – 9:30p, for those over 21, with I.D.  KIRO 97.3 FM and KING 5 TV will both simulcast the fireworks display with a soundtrack.

The Park will open for visitors at Noon on July 4th, with two entrances.  All must go through a security screening before entering, although bicycle riders will have a special entrance on the northwest side of the park for access to the bike parking area.

Items not be allowed on the park grounds on the 4th include:

  • pets
  • alcohol
  • personal barbecues
  • fireworks
  • weapons
  • tent stakes

Please do not go to celebrate at Gas Works Park if you have these items in your possession.

Nonperishable food items – for donation to Northwest Harvest – will be most welcomed!

Also, consider following up the celebration by participating on Tuesday, July 5th in a special Lake Union clean-up sponsored by Starbucks.  Volunteers get free t-shirts (while supplies last,) as well as coffee, pastries and a lunch to follow.  Three registration locations will be located, starting at 9am, around the lake, at The Center for Wooden Boats, Rogers Playfield, and Gas Works Park.  Clean-up takes place from 10 am–1 pm. Additional details, and sign ups, can be accessed at starbucks.com/seattle.

For more details on the Family 4th, check the One Reel information page.  The most important item, however, is to have a good time on the 4th!

Happy Independence Day!!
